Meet: HEMP VALLEY FARM

What’s your story? When and how was HVF started?

The story of Hemp Valley Farm begins with three surfers from San Clemente, CA, whose love for the ocean fostered a deep respect for Mother Nature. This philosophy is at the core of our approach to building the company culture. We have spent the last 15 years building a successful organic fertilizer company called "Organics Alive" that specializes in regenerative and earth-friendly approaches to cannabis and hemp farming. Through our work with Organics Alive, we developed a passion for hemp farming and a deep understanding of how to cultivate high-quality, organic hemp that is sustainable and environmentally responsible. This commitment to organic farming practices is reflected in the exceptional quality of our products and is a testament to our dedication to building a sustainable and ethical business.

What makes HVF stand out from the other brands? Hemp Valley Farm is a fully vertically integrated company that controls every aspect of our products' production. From seed to shelf, all Hemp Valley Farm products are made on our 130-acre farm in San Diego. We grow high-grade hemp flower organically and use careful hand-harvesting techniques to preserve the essential resin glands that contain CBD and other important medicinal molecules.Unlike many other companies that prioritize volume over quality, Hemp Valley Farm takes a different approach. Rather than quickly drying our hemp in large, open barns to increase production, Hemp Valley Farm carefully cures its hemp in temperature-controlled and pitch-black greenhouses. This method allows the sugars to fully convert into an array of cannabinoids that work together to bring about the plant's healing properties. Much like a fine wine, the curing process for Hemp Valley Farm's hemp is a critical step in creating a high-quality end product. What are the steps HVF takes to be a sustainable and environmentally friendly company?

The elephant in every room now- a - days… are you sustainable? Hemp Valley Farm's commitment to sustainability extends to every aspect of our farming process. No pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals of any kind are used anywhere on the farm. Instead, we use cover crops to keep the soil full of microbial life, increase its ability to hold water, capture runoff, and prevent topsoil erosion. The use of a diverse cover crop helps reduce or eliminate insects from harming the hemp crops, ensuring the purity of the final product. Hemp Valley Farm operates off-grid and uses solar power to power their operations. Additionally, the company draws fresh artesian well water directly from an aquifer over 700 feet below their farm, using it sparingly and with intention to minimize their water usage. This approach ensures that the land is treated with respect, the environment is protected, and the community benefits from their sustainable practices.

Where can we find you when you’re not at Mermade??? We officially opened our San Clemente store in 2022. We are located at 915 Calle Amanacer Suite F, Just a few doors down from Artifex Brewery. We have an online store www.hempvalleyfarmcbd.com where everyone can get more information about the farm and our products. Also our instagram!

What is the most surprising/best part about being a business owner in the "artist/shop small" space ?

I think the best parts about having a small business are the connections I get to make and the stories I get to hear. My brand is all about appreciating the magic of women and the magic of the ocean, so needless to say, the people that are drawn into my space are all so special. When I am working events like Mermade, I get the full spectrum of emotion from customers-- some come in crying about how my art moves them and some are laughing about how relatable the title "SOME CALL IT SALT WATER, WE CALL IT HOLY WATER." is to their life. I am so appreciative of all the love, support and personal stories that are shared with me in conjunction with my artwork.

How do you stay inspired for each new piece?

I stay inspired by continuing to surf! There are always waves to catch (thank God!) and there is always a new angle to approach in terms of postures, layouts and compositions. I also stay inspired by continuing to learn and listen to how the ocean changes peopleʻs lives. As I create more, the more hearts I get to reach, and the more people share with me. I love hearing about the different emotions each person feels from certain pieces of the body of work.

What is your most-loved step creating your masterpieces??

Field research!!! Plus connecting with other “waterwomen” and hearing their stories.

What's your favorite part of the process?

For this body of work, my favorite part of the creation process is using the element of salt as the watercolor is drying. I have painted the entire series of over 80 pieces on the island of Oʻahu, so depending on the day and the humidity, the salt has a completely different reaction to the saturation of the blue. Every time. Which used to bug me but I really leaned into letting the magic happen at its own pace and time. Trying to control that was like trying to control the tide!

More of YOUR STORY!

I used to hate watercolor, almost my whole life! My grandma was an incredible artist with a very delicate style. When she passed, I got all of her paints, markers and supplies. Honestly, I thought what a waste, Im never going to touch those. Even when I was planning out this body of work, I wanted to do illustrations in pencil or charcoal. I actually did the first original 4 pieces in charcoal but it just wasnt working the way I envisioned it to. I needed the fluidity and depth of actual water to do the ocean some justice! With lots of trial and error I leaned into using the medium, now were friends :)

Meet the Maker: Colleen from Ro & Arrows

A first for us, we are showcasing a toe sock at Mermade Market! They will be inside our shopping area, near the middle and towards the back wall so make sure you keep an eye out for them! We interviewed Colleen, owner & creator of Ro & Arrows for today’s meet the maker. She is local to Mission Viejo, Ca and has clients inside the studio working hard on their feet with their beautiful socks. They release & offer new products twice a year! As they continue to grow, they will be releasing more seasonal products as well.

What lead you to creating your company? What gave you the final push to jump in and start a brand?

I have a background in creating products for athletes. When I saw my pilates clients struggling to put on their toe socks, it was a no brainer that I wanted to provide them with a better option. Busy moms, bad ass career women, and studio athlete enthusiasts deserve to have a grip sock that is effortless to slip on, and still provides function and fashion.

What keeps you motivated to keep going?

Success doesn't come over night. As an entrepreneur it is important that sometimes you have to fail before you succeed. Don't let the little failures get in the way of your overall success. Use them as lessons along the way.

What is the most surprising/best part about being a business owner?

The relationships I have made with studio owners and our die hard clients. When someone geeks out on how rad our socks are....that makes this journey all worth it.

How do you stay inspired for each new collection?

I love fashion. I have 16 years in the industry. Because I am connected and always staying in touch with textile, color and design trends.. it's easy for me apply my love of fashion to my line.

What is your most loved step in creating your socks for Pilates?

I can't say there is one specific step I love the most I love the end product and the entire product process. I created my socks for a purpose. Providing people with an elevated product that's also fun is what makes owning Ro & Arrows so awesome.

If you find yourself needing some socks, hit em up on Instagram & get social with them!!!!

What is your current sock & why? Why are yours "The New" Toe sock?

Our current sock is a patented split toe exercise sock. There is no other sock on the market like it. We were intentional with every aspect of our socks yarn, patterning and silicone grip. Take that level of attention to performance and pair it with our passion for fun & fashion & you get a sock that stands out from the rest.
